  Exams
With under two weeks to go everyone has pretty much got their act together, well as far as is possible for our infamous class. Now comes the hardest part of all. I think everyone is scared shitless, I know I am. If you're not scared, stop lying to yourself. Please.
Anyway, best of luck everyone. Study hard like good children, perhaps "like a dog" as Usman does, or just don't study at all. Whatever floats your boat....
Alas! Freedom awaits us!

  Words and phrases are memories

Jobless as per usual and confined to my bed for the evening after an unfortunate episode of over-excitement whilst swimming at Himmy's today. I'll live. Slightly more productive as a result, and inspired by my temporary lack of pain free mobility, I have decided to write down my thoughts on life at this moment in time.

Here are the words that best describe these last few months in the hazy bubble I like to think of as life. I have been having some of the most awesome times ever. Great great friends, great great times and great great places. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world right now.
A picture is worth a thousand words right?

Slightly (not completely) inspired by Annelie's previous entry on words, although this has nothing at all to do with what she was talking about. It's just words that got my thinking...
In no particular order, for memories sake... words and random phrases of the recent happenings:

  The Lost Ones...
I went to see this amazing performance at Bishops called "The Lost Ones" by The Vanishing Point Theatre Company on Saturday afternoon. A Scottish troop imported by the British Council to wow the minds of us in Lanka. I had heard so much praise for it by everyone that had seen it on the Thursday and Friday showings that had no idea what to expect. I walked in and sat down with high expectations and needless to say was so impressed by every single aspect of the performance. The lighting.. the co-ordination.. the actors themselves... the stage effects and the set. I don't think I have seen anything quite like it in my entire life, let alone in the theatre deprived city of Colombo.

I'm not going to write some long winded and random review on it as I could never do it justice, and more importantly I have absolutely no idea how to write one. Everyone I have tried to explain it to has looked at me suspiciously and then gone on to give me rather funny looks at the fact my favourite parts of the entire show were when a tall skinny Scottish man (resembling Napolean Dynamite) jumped on stage in a school uniform and sang his heart out to a slightly fruity banjo. Funny eh?

If you saw it: great show right?
If you didn't: why on earth didn't you!?

One thing I must say though is that there could have been a much larger turn out. When I went to see the show on the Saturday matinee, the auditorium was only about 1/3 full. It's such a shame that more people didn't come and enjoy something that was so different from what Colombo usually experiences, especially when all people do is complain about how under-cultured Colombo is and that there is never anything on!

  Fat Tony

Anthony was our mentor last year, until he had to go and graduate on us. Gone are the days of continual insults and random guitar sing alongs to tunes made up on the spot. Sulaiman's Dying... Luke's Teeth.. Mr Shearer... Great great memories..
Anyway this dude is probably the best guitar player I know personally and his stuff is definitely worth checking out, so please do! His blog has links to some of his stuff.

  When boredom takes over...
With the completion of my first few blog entries, all sources of inspiration have seemingly dried up. What is up with her imagination you must be thinking. The truth is that lethargy has taken over my body and the random tit-bits of nothingness that I am known for by my ever loving friends have long left me. Sad isn't it.

So for now I am going to write a bit about the one thing I have been definitely been doing too little of lately... Reading. Here are my top ten (at the moment seven) reads; not necessarily books, but also magazines, newspapers and comics.
Anything interesting that manages to cure my sporadic fits of boredom:

  1. National Geographic
It's brimming with suprisingly interesting articles about everything under the sun. You can find out about issues that you never thought would interest you or never knew existed. The range of topics covered is that diverse! The photography is also something that deserves a mention... As Yanik says, it's AWESOME! I especially like the monthly feature they have about a towns from different Zip Code... there sure are some weird ass Hicksvilles out there!

  2. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I had to read this for my O Level Literature course and I hated every single word the first time I read it. After five reads it has grown on me to the extent that it now one of my favourite books. Funny eh?
The description used by Fitzgerald is fascinating. He can make the most insignificant object or person seem the most important thing out there, sometimes with detail to the extent that it's off putting. This however makes the book what it is. With loads of hidden symbols, wacky imagry (thanks Miss Attygalle for that) and a cool plot I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  3. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
One of my all time favourites, if not out respect for the author who was able to write so convincingly in character as an autistic teenager. I really don't know how he managed to capture what goes through the mind of an autism sufferer but he did and did so very well! A really easy but good read that might leave you with a different outlook on life.

  4. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (Series) By Sue Townsend
I haven't met many people in Sri Lanka who have read this so I am afraid I have to say they have missed out. It is something that every child grows up with in England. The first book in the series, "The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Age 13 3/4" sees Mole as a spotty teenager old with more problems than he can deal with. He is a self proclaimed literary interlectual whose poetry has just been rejected by the BBC, his parents are about to divorce and he has just been dumped by his girlfriend. The irony that is oh so undetectable when you first read it as a 12 year becomes more and more apparent the older you get and with its 1980s context it's hilarious!
The lastest in the series, "Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction" sees Adrian as a failed thirty something year old, divorced with a child to support. His irony lives on into the 1990s and the book is just as good as the first.

  5. The Week
I'm such a nerd... but as soon as a new issue is out I rush to the school library to inconspicuously steal it and take it home to read in the confines of my own room. With the only TV of the house being in my brother's room, I really cannot be bothered to risk cutting my life short by venturing into his stinking pit. Instead I resort to reading "The Week". It's a British based news magazine that I find an interesting read. It has a good overview of the happenings in the world and some good movie reviews of independent films as well as the bigger ones. Saves me from dying during my free periods.

  6. Inspector Morse Series by Colin Dexter
You might have seen the BBC TV series of these books, but if you haven't it's just your average detective series to be honest. I can relate to it because it is set in my home town, and all the places mentioned I know or have been to. That's what makes it cool. Actually I have changed my mind, it's not average. It's really really good, otherwise I wouldn't be writing it here.

  7. TIN TIN Series by Herge
I love this comic soooooo much. Bah to all the other comics out there. Tin Tin is lightyears head. With the good old Captain, Snowy and the rest of the gang I never ever get bored of reading the series. Ever. Poo to Spawn and Sin City.

  8. The Bible
For reasons other than the obvious... Some of the stories are bizarre!

  9. Boy & Going Solo by Roald Dahl
Anyone who has read these books will know why I love them so much. Dahl must have had the most amazing childhood ever if everything written is actually true. His random diversions into his family history could have been so dull and boring but they're not at all. Both Boy & Going Solo are awesome!

  Don Francisuge Himansu Perera

This is Himansu. He is one of my closest friends and has some really cool though slightly disturbing drawings. If you're feeling bored or you like art, why not have a quick look at his blog.
Don't be put off by the random commentary to his pics.. You will only really understand it if you know him well. :-)

  La Musique
Some of my favourite musicians of all time seem to sing and perform in languages other than my own. I don't know what it is that attracts me to this except that fact that good music is going to be good music no matter what language the words are sung in. When you can feel what the song is trying to say purely through the vibes and the passion put into it, it makes you appreciate it a whole lot more.

My Top 15 foreign language artists and groups (in no particular order):
  1. Khaled
  2. Astrud Gilberto
  3. Buena Vista Social Club (and any associated members etc)
  4. Telephone
  5. Andrea Bocceli
  6. Faudel
  7. Cheb Mami
  8. Gilberto Gil
  9. Joao Gilberto
  10. MC Solaar
  11. Rachid Taha
  12. Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66
  13. Bebel Gilberto
  14. Shakira
  15. Caetano Veloso

Top 20 Songs:

  1. Ces Soiree La - Yannick Noah (ahhhhh for the sake of all those memories :-D)
  2. Quelqu'un M'a Dit - Carla Bruni
  3. Dieu Ait Son Âme - MC Solaar
  4. Vivo Per Lei - Andrea Bocceli & Laura Pausini
  5. Tellement n'Brick - Faudel
  6. Aicha - Khaled
  7. Mais Que Nada - Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66
  8. Pais Tropical - Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66
  9. Youm Wara Youm - Cheb Mami & Samira Said
  10. Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo - Gilberto Gil
  11. Agua De Bebe - Astrud Gilberto & Antonio Carlos Jobim
  12. Menfi - Rachid Taha, Khaled & Faudel (from 1, 2, 3 Soleils)
  13. Superstarr- MC Solaar
  14. Abdel Kader - Khaled, Rachid Taha & Faudel (again from 1, 2, 3 Soleils)
  15. Un Peu De Ton Amour - Telephone
  16. Cendrillion - Telephone
  17. Chan Chan - Buena Vista Social Club
  18. Du Rire Aux Larmes - Sniper
  19. Chega De Saudade - Bebel & Joao Gilberto
  20. Didi - Khaled

A lot of musicians I mentioned are actually long gone and have been for a while now (Telephone was a French punk band functioning in the late 70s). I still feel, however, that the English speaking world is ready for something other than English. English is the most unexpressive language out there and let's face it, its mainstream music these days is not the most inspiring. Just think of the Pussy Cat Dolls or something similar. It would be really cool if some of these artists I have mentioned got the international recognition they deserve, and people were able to broaden their tastes to something that is hopefully a bit different.

  May 8th 2006
May 8th 2006 is the date on my calender that is looming ever closer. Every day the hours left until O Levels begin are diminishing, and yet the real pressure doesn't seem to have hit me at all. With hours spent at home doing, lets face it nothing, every single day for the last week, methinks I could have mustered up the effort to at least get something done. Instead I have been reduced to feebly flicking though my chemistry notes (chem is what everyone is supposed to be most afraid of right?), fooling myself (as well as my trusting parents) that I am actually studying. With an attention span for this kind of thing that is considerably small, after every 10 minutes of studying i end up taking a 45 minute break and legging it to the computer :-) What to do? A week before the exams I will be paying for it.

Lucky enough to have parents who let me do pretty much what I like, wherever and whenever I wish to do it and give me the responsibility to look after my school work (which I usually do), I just made myself look like I take advantage of them. That is definitely not the case most of the time, there just needs to be a sense of immidietness (is that a word?) for me to get up and do something productive. Up till now this has always meant night before cramming. Somehow I don't think that's going to work this time and I'm starting to wonder when this immidietness and urgency is going to finally desend upon me!
Dreaming of the 26th of May...
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..
